How to nail your graduation project with 3D printing — a Kuwait student's guide

From file format to budget to last-minute panic submissions — everything a Kuwait University, GUST, AUK, AUM, or ACK student needs to know before sending a graduation project to be 3D printed.

Every semester we get the same panicked WhatsApp at 11 PM: "My defence is in 36 hours, can you print this?"

We say yes more often than not — but it costs more, and the result is rarely as good as it would've been with a week's notice. Here's how to plan ahead.

1. Pick the right material before you model

Most students design first and ask about material later. That's backwards. The material constrains your wall thickness, your tolerances, and your finish — design for it.

  • PLA — Default for visual models, architectural massing, presentation pieces. Cheapest, fastest, best detail.
  • PETG — Functional prototypes that need to handle some force or be slightly flexible.
  • ABS — Mechanical parts. Smoother finish if you want to acetone-vapour it.
  • TPU — Soft / rubbery parts. Phone cases, gaskets, soles.
  • ASA — Outdoor parts, anything that will sit in the sun.

2. File format checklist

We accept STL, OBJ, STEP, IGES, and 3MF. STL is the most universal. Some advice:

  • Export STL at "fine" quality (deviation 0.01 mm or smaller). SolidWorks default is too coarse — your curves come out faceted.
  • Check for holes before sending. Use Meshmixer or Netfabb — both free. A model with non-manifold edges won't slice properly.
  • Orient parts thoughtfully. Tall thin features print better with their long axis vertical, but flat surfaces look best face-down. Tell us your priority.
  • Avoid scale ambiguity. Always confirm units (mm). Confusing inches with mm is the #1 reason a part comes out 25× too big or small.

3. Wall thickness rules

For FDM printing on a 0.4 mm nozzle:

  • Walls: minimum 1.2 mm (3 perimeters). Anything thinner is fragile.
  • Holes: print 0.2 mm undersized — they shrink slightly. We'll widen them in post if needed.
  • Text / engraving: minimum 0.8 mm depth, 1 mm stroke width to read clearly.
  • Overhangs > 45°: need supports. We add them automatically; just know they leave marks.

4. Budget realistically

Costs scale with part volume (material) + print time + finishing. Rough guidance for a typical student project (palm-sized, PLA, single colour, no painting):

  • Quick prototypes (under 50 g): low cost, ready in 24 hours
  • Standard project parts (50–200 g): moderate cost, 2–3 days
  • Large display models (500 g+): higher cost, 4–5 days
  • Painted / finished pieces: add 30–60% for post-processing time

Ask for a quote before you decide on the final size. Doubling a model's dimensions multiplies material use 8×, not 2×.

5. Schedule

  • Two weeks out: send us your model for a printability check. We flag issues for free.
  • One week out: finalise the file and confirm the print. Get into the queue.
  • 48 hours out: collect and pressure-test (does it fit your assembly? does it look right under defence-room lighting?).
  • 24 hours out: don't start a new model. Print what you've got.
